“Yes I did, and I wanted to know how everything went.”

Oh man. My face explodes in what is likely the deepest shade of red. “Well, I like your granddaughter a whole lot.”

She looks me up and down. “Well, I always liked you. I guessed you were a decent guy. And if you’re still hanging around, I’m guessing it wasn’t a one-night stand. Or a one-time afternoon delight.”

  “Oh geez.”

“Son, I’m eighty-seven years old. I want great-grandbabies and her dummy older brothers aren’t worth a toot in the relationship department—at least, not yet, anyway. So my Delilah is my best hope of having great-grandbabies sooner rather than later. None of this started with immaculate conception, you know.”

“I suppose it did not, ma’am.”

Louisa looks me up and down, assessing me for a moment. Then she hands me Delilah’s car keys.

I do something I hadn’t planned on doing, but it only seems right. I hand her the keys to my SUV.

“This car belongs to the church. Maybe you can turn in these keys to the council for me.”

She squints at me as she takes the keys. “But how will you get home?”

I can’t help the grin on my face. “I think I have a new one.”

The old woman nods thoughtfully. “OK. But I’m keeping my eye on you. And I’ll break your kneecaps if you break her heart.”

She walks a few rows back to where, apparently, Delilah’s mother and brothers are sitting. I nod and wave at them all, who appear disinterested. Delilah’s mom seems to be busy on her phone.

I sit down, but my energy level can’t calm down. All at the same time, I’m liking this roller derby action and I’m not liking it. There seems to be one skater on the opposing team who is hell bent on tripping up my girl, and I don’t like it.

Delilah zooms past me at one point, and I see her wink at me with her massively long lashes.

Just when I start to relax about my girl getting herself hurt, she’s one the floor. I’m on my feet. “Delilah!”

Of course the racket is so loud in this room, nobody can hear me. Others on the track trip and fall over her, except the girl from the other team who knocked her down is looking back at her over her shoulder.

It was a penalty the ref missed, I know that much. I’m halfway to running onto the track to help her up but she’s already up and on top of the player who knocked her down.

  “Whoa!” I shout.

The two women are whaling on each other. I can’t believe what’s happening. Some depraved monster in my belly is enjoying watching my girl slap the shit out of that other chick, but at the same time, my protective instinct finally wins out. Before any of her teammates or the ref can stop me, I’m on the track, pulling Delilah off the woman.

Delilah comes up hissing and kicking and writhing, but she’s no match for my arms.

The pair of us struggle off the track like a whirling, sputtering hot mess. Several refs bleat their whistles at us, pronouncing the both of us ejected from the game. “Yeah, yeah, we’re leaving!”

I’m so mad and turned on and confused by my feelings that I don’t hear or see any of the rowdy crowd jeering or catcalling. I carry her all the way out the door, down the corridor and out to the parking lot.

She’s pounding on me and shouting for me to put her down.

When we get to my car, I set her down gently on her feet. She’s still breathing heavy.

“What the fuck was that, Delilah?”

She shrugs. “Bitch pissed me off.”

I don’t know what to say, I just shake my head.

Delilah looks around, still breathless. “Oh good. Oma brought my car.”

“I hope you’re proud of yourself for fighting in front of her.”

“Shit, boy, that old lady taught me to fight. And to roller skate.”

  “Excuse me?”

“Yeah. Sweet little quilt-making Louisa. Otherwise known as A-Bomb Betty back in the day. So if you can’t handle me getting dirty, you can go.”

“I ain’t letting you go back in there.”

  “Well, I ain’t leaving.”

“Yes, you are. You need to get out of here before you get hurt.”

She shakes her head. “I’m just going inside to get my keys from Oma.”

I hold up the keys over her head. “Your Oma gave them to me.”

Her eyes go wide. “You talked to my family?”

“Hells yes. So glad I did. Sounds to me like your Oma really, really wants great-grandbabies.”

“Oh god. Just give me my keys.”

“Why? So you can drive angry?”

Delilah’s nostrils flare and her eyes narrow.

  “I can hot wire it.”

I follow her while she spins and marches off.

“Even if you could, it’s really hard to do that with modern cars, except … Holy fucking shit. Is that…?”

Delilah pulls at the door of a sleek, black monster of a classic car. “A Galaxie 500, yes.”

The derby girl outfit, the chick fight, and the car are all competing for the credit of making my dick suddenly exceptionally hard.

“Are you kidding me with this car?”

  “It was my Opa’s.”

  “Shut up.”

  “I will not.”

For the second time tonight, I pick up my girl from behind. Only this time, I’m bending her over the hood.

  Chapter Nine

  Delilah

  I knew it.

I knew the second I saw Boone’s face when I took to the track that he was turned on by the entire prospect of watching me roll, and I could tell when he picked me up off of Helena Handbasket that his dick was harder than my helmet.

And that little spat we had out back behind the arena? Well, that part was working for me. So now that he’s finally got me bent over the hood of my car and I feel his cock pressing into my ass, I have to bite my lip to control the excited squeal.

Boone’s voice is pinched and angry in my ear, his puffs of air blowing at the tendrils of hair that have escaped my hair tie and fallen out of my helmet, over my ear. “I didn’t know what I was getting myself into when I dragged you outta church this morning, did I? I got myself a feisty little hellcat in spanky pants. Do you have any idea what you do to me? You do know, don’t you?”

I think all the moisture in my body pools inside my undies at his gravelly, frustrated voice.

I don’t respond with words. Instead I taunt him by swiping my ass against his lap, first in one direction and then slowly back the other. The slow friction makes him hiss. Not done wielding my ass’s power, I let loose a quick jiggle, making him cuss and grunt my name.

“Oh, I have some idea, preacher man.”

His cock seems to grow even more, and it kicks against my backside.

“Baby, keep it up with that sassy mouth and I’m going to have to take you right here, right now, out in the open.”

I peel off my helmet and let it drop to the ground, then free my hair. “Nobody’s out here but us, baby.”

The low growl grows inside his chest. “Bad girl is gonna make me do bad things. Tonight, tomorrow, next week and forever. You know that, right?”

I think for a second he’s going to make me wait until we have some privacy, but then I hear him unbuckle and unzip his jeans. Oh god. He popped my cherry this afternoon and now we’re already about to fuck on top of my car? Talk about zero-to-sixty in less than ten seconds. My clit is already screaming for his touch.

I reach back to touch him, but he barks, “Keep your hands on the hood.”

My nipples tighten at his command and I do as I’m told.

Boone’s hand is on my thigh, roughly petting me all the way up until it’s under the hem of my little stretchy pants. His hand pushes aside the crotch of my shorts and my undies and he strokes me hard. I suck in a breath through my teeth.

“Fuck, baby, you’re soaked already. Have you been egging me on this whole time?”

  Now he’s
got both hands inside my panties. Seams rip. Before I can voice my objection to him ruining my clothes, he’s got a finger in my cunt and another circling my clit.

I can barely form words, I’m so worked up. “Uhm. May…maybe?” My words are breathy and high pitched.

Through his teeth he hisses, “Playing dumb now? My baby’s gonna get it. She ain’t dumb. She’s smart as hell and she knows exactly what she’s doing to me.”

I look back at him and smile wickedly while Boone pushes his dick inside. This afternoon we made love. Tonight we’re just fuckin’ like animals.

“You’re still so tight, Delilah,” he whispers.

All I can do is smile and sigh and bite my lip while his dick slides in and out, building my heat as the head of it hits me in an all new, special kind of spot inside my body. My pussy clamps down.

“You like that? My little hellcat likes to get fucked on top of her car. She likes being wicked outside where anyone can see us. Anybody could walk out here and see us, do you realize that?”

I don’t respond to his question because I don’t care. I love this version of Boone, angry-fucking me. “Deeper.”

  “Shit,” he says. “Yes.”

The next moment he’s plowing me from behind, my torso resting on the hood and my thighs wrapped around his waist.

The hard thrusts are making it difficult for me to steady myself on my elbows, but my pleasure reaches its pinnacle so quickly that I shatter within a couple of minutes. The intensity of my climax has Boone roaring his orgasm into me. He’s buried all the way to the hilt, shouting my name and spurting into me again and again.

  Oh shit. The spurting.

  “Baby, pull out!”

  “Shit! OK…”

  “Fuck, we forgot the…”

  “I know, Shit.”

I feel our juices dripping down my thighs as we pull ourselves together.

He apologizes over and over, but some part of me isn’t even mad.

Would it be that terrible if…? It’s a ridiculous thought to have on day one.

  Isn’t it?

  Chapter Ten

  Boone

I mentally kick myself the whole drive back to her apartment.

I’m a complete jerk for forgetting a condom, but she’s not even mad.

Since I destroyed her uniform, I wrapped her up in a blanket in the passenger seat of her car while I ran inside to grab her gear bag from the locker room.

When I came back to the car, Delilah was dozing.

I have to admit, I was grateful that I got to drive that car. I’ve never seen one in such good condition.

I watch her snooze after I park the car at her building. I think I might love this woman. How could I not?

When she stirs inside the blanket, I carry her inside despite her reminders that she knows how to walk.

  “Boone, what about your car?”

I shrug. “Technically it’s the church’s car. I gave the keys to Louisa to give back to the council.” I take her keys from her and let us in the door.

“But they haven’t for sure fired you yet.”

“Delilah, I don’t think I’m going back there,” I say, grinning at her and kicking the door closed behind us with my foot.

I set her down and she pads off to the kitchen to get a drink of water. “Because of me?”

“No, because of me. I don’t belong there anymore. I belong with you. For the first time in my life I feel like I’m where I’m meant to be. I’m doing things I’ve never done before, and I want to keep going forward. I don’t want to go backward. If that’s all right with you.”

She grins shyly. “Between outside sex and derby, I think we’re off to a good start on never going backward. What’s on the docket for tomorrow, pastor?”

I wince. I know she’s only teasing, but I don’t like that title anymore. “Tomorrow I should probably head back to the parsonage to pack up my things.”

“I can help you,” she says.

I look at her quizzically. “Helping someone move is a brutal way to start a relationship.”

  She smiles. “Relationship?”

I smile and saunter over to her. “Well. Yeah. Isn’t that what this is?”

“I don’t know. We never discussed it.”

“Then let’s discuss it now. You in? ’Cause I am.”

  “Let’s get some sleep first.”

I nod and sit down on the bed to remove my shoes. “Is this hesitation about me and my legal troubles?”

I watch her shake her head as she strip off what’s left of her clothes. “No. I don’t give half a shit about any of that. You were in the right.” She pulls on some cheeky shorts and a baseball shirt.

We climb into bed together and have the talk. The relationship talk.

  It’s a good talk.

“I had a really good day with you, getting you to do things you’d never done before. And the best part is, now I get to do something I’ve never done before,” she says.

  “What’s that?” I ask.

“Sleep the whole night in someone’s arms.”

I kiss her behind the ear. I yawn and say, “Tomorrow is going to be even better.”

  Chapter Eleven

  Delilah

In the morning, I sneak out of bed early to make coffee. The aroma wakes him and he sits up in bed. I will never tire of looking at that scrumptious man tangled up in my sheets.

“I feel like a jerk,” he says.

I putter around the kitchenette, confused. “Why?”

“Because my legal woes are just beginning. I’m facing a long list of charges and I haven’t entered a plea yet. And there’s more. I’m not sure it’s illegal exactly, as I think it was my money, but—”

I interrupt him. “For the record, I don’t give a shit about legal troubles. I’ve had a few of my own.”

Pulling on his jeans, he saunters into the postage stamp-size kitchen, looking like a Hulk inside a Barbie doll house. God, he’s like a Sasquatch with washboard abs and no body hair.

“I’ve had an assault charge in my time. One or two. Does that bother you?”

“No. But it does make me curious.”

“It happened before I decided to go back to school. I was drinking a lot with my friends. I got a little too feisty at a seedy bar, sort of got into it with a couple of ladies.”

  “A couple?”

“Yeah. So I don’t drink as much anymore. I’m not dry or anything, just careful. Is that going to be a problem for you?”

Boone comes close, brushing my hair out of my face and plants a long warm kiss on my forehead. “Baby. There is nothing you could do to make me walk away now. I want you. I’m your guy; you’re my girl. Are we square now?”

My eyes flutter closed as my body responds to the word “baby.” I barely hear anything else he says after that because my pulse throbs in my ears and my body melts into him. He feels the melting and wraps his arms around me. Kissing him with my body pressed against his hard chest, my hands on his ridiculously hard stomach is about the nicest place I’ve ever been. Boone’s lips kiss me with soft suction, swiping across my lips with such tender sweetness. That, combined with his big hands caressing me all over my back, makes me want to purr like a kitten.

  “Meow-meow.”

I feel him smile against my lips in response to my kitty cat noises and he moans in pleasure. “Baby, we’d better cool it or I’m not going to have any energy to pack up my shit,” he says.

“And I won’t have any energy for packing boxes, and whatever else we might get up to,” I say.

  “What you got in mind?”

As much as I hate to, I press my hands against his chest to push away. “Another surprise.”

“It’s not another derby bout is it?”

Naw, next one is in three weeks. So, plenty of time to heal.”

  “Heal what?”

I say nothing but smile into his shoulder and breathe in his citrusy, masculine scent.

  We pull into the alleyway
between the rows of squat ranch homes and I’m immediately thrown back to my childhood in the suburbs and episodes of King of the Hill, which were not much of an exaggeration from what I saw growing up. As we drive past the trash bins and the backs of houses, I half expect to see Hank, Dale, and Boomhauer drinking Shiners and solving the world’s problems.

  “What?” he asks.

“Nothing,” I say with a shrug. “Just…kind of a nondescript place for a mega-church pastor to live.”

He explains that they wanted to get him into a bigger home on the “right” side of town, closer to the church, possibly to encourage him to marry and start filling it with children immediately, but that he couldn’t justify the price tag.

We spend the entire morning packing boxes, and by lunchtime we’re finished.

“You don’t have a lot of stuff.”

He shrugs and looks me straight in the eye. “I don’t feel a powerful need to possess things. I prefer connections and experiences,” he says.

We begin to talk about what to do for lunch when we’re interrupted by a phone call for Boone. The look on his face says it has to do with his job. He looks over at me with regret and tells me he has to take it. I nod my understanding and step outside onto the back patio just when my own phone rings.

  “Hi, Oma. What’s going on?”

“Are you with that man right now?”

I glance over my shoulder through the sliding door and take in the view of Boone casually leaning against his small kitchen island with one arm crossed over his abdomen, like he’s girding himself from an invisible punch to the gut. His eyes are on me. They’re still smoldering, but yet can’t hide the happiness that has grown in him since we met yesterday. He smiles at me while he talks, making my heart skip a beat.

“Yes, I’m here with Boone,” I say into the phone.

Oma lets out a weird half shout, half shriek. “Do you have any idea what he did?”

My eyes widen and my breath hitches. I turn from him to focus on the concrete patio. “No. What?”

“I went and checked my bank account this morning, and there was a higher balance than usual. I called the bank and they said it was not a mistake. Did you know about this? This seems like something you would be in on. You never could stay out of trouble.”
